*WHAT HAPPENED IN ACTS 2? (2)*
Who the audience was on the day of Pentecost had earlier been clarified in our previous study. Recall, tongues is not human language hence this gift is not the skill for linguists, it is by the spirit (1st Corinthians 12:4, 7, 8-11).
1st Corinthians 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1st Corinthians 14:13 – 17
Tongues don’t edify the hearer because it is not understood.
Prophecy edifies because it is tongues plus interpretation of tongues. Interpretation of tongues is to, by the spirit know and express what was said in tongues in the language of the listener. Prophecy is a gift of the spirit.
Tongues would edify and build the speaker but not the hearer.
1st Corinthians 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Paul gave orderliness to the use of tongues in assemblies.
Tongues cannot be used to minister except with interpretation.
Why? It’s because the assembly involves other believers hence the need for them to be edified.
1st Corinthians 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
Vs 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Interpretation of tongues is not needed when tongues is spoken privately to God. In church however, interpretation is needed. When there is no interpretation when tongues is used in Church, the person should speak and be silent; this implies such tongues should be directed to God (you edify yourself) and not individuals/church. Tongues must have first been spoken before the interpretation hence Luke’s narrative captured the beginning (Acts 2:1-4) but the audience captured the latter events. Since the interpreter of tongues is never the listener, but the speaker.
So in Acts 2, the audience could only have heard the interpretation, then they understood what they seemed to have said earlier in gibberish (to their minds). On the day of Pentecost, what happened was tongues and interpretation of tongues. Acts 10:44 and Acts 19:6 had similar scenarios.
Confession: I edify myself with tongues and I choose to interpret my tongues to edify others.
