Jacob stole Esau’s birthright, which in ancient times was the special privilege given to the firstborn son. This birthright, known as the “bekorah” in Hebrew, granted the eldest son a double portion of the family inheritance and leadership over the family after the father’s death.
In the biblical story found in Genesis 25, Esau, being the firstborn, was entitled to this privilege, but he sold his birthright to Jacob in exchange for a meal when he was famished. Later, Jacob also deceived their father Isaac into giving him the blessing intended for Esau, further solidifying his claim to both the birthright and the blessing.
