*IN MY NAME YOU SHALL SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES.*
*What happened in Acts 2?*
*The first time men spoke with tongues was Acts 2:1-4 and this took place for the space of 3 hours.*
Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Vs 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Vs 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Vs 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Peter on the day of Pentecost addressed an amazed crowd.
Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
He said it is a sign that Jesus sits at the right hand of the father and because of this we have things to see and hear.
Recall; in our earlier study we had examined the nature of tongues and explained that tongues isn’t human language but a different mode of communication. Hence there shouldn’t be an assumption that speaking in tongues is speaking someone’s language somewhere.
Back to Acts 2, why were the crowd gathered on the day of Pentecost?
Acts 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Observe that the crowd constitute of the Jews who came from every nation under the earth. They were Jews who lived in Diaspora. The feast was for the Jews so they would come from different locations to celebrate the feast of Pentecost.
Paul travelled same way once;
Acts 20:16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
Paul lived in Asia, but came to Jerusalem at Pentecost. This exemplifies the men from every nation above; Jews who lived in different nations.
Were there different languages spoken on the day of Pentecost?
Acts 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Proselytes are converts to the Jewish nation. So they will learn the language in this conversation because they were the strangers who sought to nationalize.
Practical: pray in tongues today for at least one hour
