Why Were The Samaritans So Hated
The Samaritans were historically disliked by the Jews for several reasons:
1. **Historical Division**: After the kingdom of Israel split into Israel (north) and Judah (south), the Assyrian conquest of the northern kingdom led to the exile of many Israelites. Those who remained intermarried with other peoples, leading to a mixed population.
2. **Religious Differences**: Samaritans adopted a syncretistic form of worship, blending elements of Jewish faith with other religious practices. They only accepted the first five books of the Bible (the Torah) and built their own temple on Mount Gerizim, in contrast to the Jerusalem Temple.
3. **Cultural Rivalry**: Over centuries, tensions grew, with each group viewing the other as heretical. Jews often referred to Samaritans as “dogs,” indicating disdain.
